BP Oddo, DA McMahon Partner Again for ‘Litter Heroes’ to Clean their Communities

3/23/2021

Small groups are encouraged to get out and clean up neighborhoods in a safe way

Borough President James Oddo and District Attorney Michael E. McMahon announced today they are continuing their partnership to encourage small, organized groups who are interested in hosting cleanups in their neighborhoods to do so.

“We continue to combat the war on litter and thank those Staten Islanders who have taken the extra step to clean up their neighborhoods,” said Borough President Oddo. “We are calling on constituents to help us in this fight, and are grateful to those doing their part to correct this self-inflicted problem.”

The Borough President and District Attorney want to caution groups to hold clean ups only where it is safe to do so, exercise safety at all times, and only clean on good quality air days.

“I have lived on Staten Island all my life and unfortunately these are the absolute filthiest conditions as to litter and graffiti I have ever seen,” said DA McMahon. “All City agencies responsible and their leadership should be ashamed! People who litter and commit graffiti vandalism should also be ashamed, and wherever we can, will be prosecuted. Meanwhile, the citizens of Staten Island must come to the rescue. As the weather gets nicer and we begin spending more time outdoors, it’s important now more than ever that we ensure our communities are kept safe and clean. Building on the success of our anti-litter initiative, I am proud to announce my office is once again partnering with Borough President Oddo to take on this important issue. We have been greatly encouraged to see community groups have joined our call to action to help beautify our borough through regular community cleanups, and we look forward to many more clean-ups in the months ahead.”

Local groups who are interested in hosting a cleanup and need a site to clean or need support with supplies – including masks, garbage bags, and/or gloves – should email Irene Maiello at imaiello@statenislandusa.com or Lisa Thompson at Lisa.Thompson@rcda.nyc.gov.

Groups are asked to organize themselves and take necessary safety precautions, including:
Keep groups to 10 people or less
Practice social distancing
Wear a mask and gloves
Stay hydrated
Do not handle illicit drug paraphernalia or potentially dangerous items, report them to 311

Those who participate are encouraged to post before and after photos on social media with the hashtag #SILitterHero to be re-posted by both office’s social media accounts.

Borough President James Oddo and District Attorney Michael E. McMahon announced today they are encouraging small, organized groups who are interested in hosting clean ups in their neighborhoods to do so.

“We’ve had several groups reach out to our office who are interested in doing clean ups,” said Borough President Oddo. “I’m heartened by these groups – Scouts and others – who are willing to go out and clean up. I’d like to encourage those who are willing and able to do so to send us pictures of their work so we can thank you for doing your part to correct this self-inflicted problem.”

The Borough President and District Attorney want to caution groups to hold clean ups only where it is safe to do so, exercise safety at all times, and only clean on good quality air days.

“Litter is a problem of our own doing, yet too many of our neighbors continue to carelessly dispose of their trash on our sidewalks, streets, and parks. Not only does this selfish behavior become an eyesore and is punishable by law, we know unkept public spaces can become magnets for far more serious criminal activity,” said District Attorney McMahon. “I’m proud to join Borough President Oddo in encouraging and supporting considerate Staten Islanders to clean up after their less-thoughtful neighbors. While it should not have to be this way, together we can make our Island a cleaner and safer place.”

Staten Island Delegation Announce Donation of 5,000 N95 Masks for RUMC, SIUH

3/30/2020

Joint statement by Borough President Oddo, Congressman Max Rose, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Senator Diane Savino, Senator Andrew Lanza, Assemblyman Michael Cusick, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, Assemblyman Mike Reilly, Assemblyman Charles Fall, Councilman Steven Matteo, Councilman Joe Borelli, and Councilwoman Debi Rose:

“As elected officials during the time of COVID-19, our shared and primary focus is ensuring those on the front lines of this fight are equipped with the equipment and support necessary to continue their inspiring, life-saving work. We are proud to supply 5,000 N95 masks to Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital, to be given directly to the heroes working around the clock to treat our family members, loved ones, and neighbors suffering from this terrible illness.”

The 5,000 N95 masks were purchased with funds from District Attorney McMahon Office’s NYS Asset Forfeiture Fund. When the district attorney’s office prosecutes crimes against revenue (benefits fraud, unemployment fraud, etc.), a percentage of the money is provided to the NYS Asset Forfeiture Fund for use in a variety of ways.

PPE DONATIONS NEEDED:

Staten Island’s elected official delegation will continue to work in close coordination to continue directing PPE to the places they are most needed. On March 21, 2020, the Staten Island Delegation put out a call to any dentists or physicians who may be closing their offices during this time to donate their PPE so that healthcare professionals on the front lines of this crisis can continue to safely care for ill patients. The delegation has now extended this to all small businesses that are closed or seeing fewer patients during this time. Any offices interested in donating should visit www.statenislandusa.com/PPE and fill out the intake form. A staff member from Borough Hall will be in touch shortly to arrange pick up of your donations.

BP Oddo, DA McMahon announce “Hiya Neighbor” social media campaign encouraging Staten Islanders to check on senior citizens in their communities

3/30/2020

Borough President James S. Oddo announced today that his office has partnered with District Attorney Michael E. McMahon to launch a campaign called “Hiya Neighbor,” bringing the principles of New York State’s Strive for Five Challenge to our community.

The “Hiya Neighbor” campaign encourages Staten Islanders to check on the senior citizens in their neighborhoods, making sure they are doing OK, all the while practicing social distancing.

The Strive for Five Challenge was created as a way for New Yorkers to look out for their fellow New Yorkers, continuing social connections as we work our way through COVID-19. The challenge consists of the following: find five people who you will check-in with by phone, video, chat or social media each day for the next 30-days, with an emphasis on prioritizing people who may be isolated, live alone, are in recovery, or who are feeling anxious or fearful.

The Strive for Five Challenge reminds people to remember the key elements of empathy as they reach out to their friends and family: I am in this with you; I am not here to fix you; I am not here to feel it for you; But I AM here to feel it with you and let you know you are not alone.

“A population that really concerns us right now in the wake of this coronavirus outbreak is our elderly friends and family members, as we unfortunately know that this virus has the potential to be very dangerous to them,” noted Borough President Oddo. “We want to make sure that people have what they need right now, but can’t stress enough the importance of being as safe as possible. With that in mind, I am asking neighbors to check in with the older adults on your blocks. Give them a call, ring the bell and jump back 6 feet to say hello, do your part to make sure everything is OK. We will get through this, but we have to work together to do so.”

“COVID-19 has impacted every American in one way or another, however its effects are felt most acutely by elder Americans, particularly those who live alone. The Hiya Neighbor campaign encourages Staten Islanders to check in on those who may be struggling getting basic supplies, battling loneliness, or are just missing out on their daily activities." noted DA McMahon. "We are asking every Staten Islander to “Strive for Five,” and safely check in on five individuals who might be in need or at advanced risk from COVID-19. Thank you to Borough President Oddo for his outstanding leadership on behalf of our borough during these difficult times.”

Staten Island Elected Officials Announce Purchase of Limited Amount of Supplies to Temporarily Fill the Gaps of Local Not For Profits on Front Lines

3/25/2020

Joint statement by Borough President Oddo, Congressman Max Rose, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Senator Diane Savino, Senator Andrew Lanza, Assemblyman Michael Cusick, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, Assemblyman Mike Reilly, Assemblyman Charles Fall, Councilman Steven Matteo, Councilman Joe Borelli, and Councilwoman Debi Rose:

“Surge; Supplies; Staffing. These are the three overarching concerns we continue to be focused on. Our offices have been and will continue to do all we can to ensure that our local hospitals, clinicians, not-for profits, community-based organizations (CBOs), and anyone else who needs supplies, does in fact have what they need. We are in an all-out effort to work every level of government and every other possible source to acquire the supplies and equipment needed for our healthcare professionals.”

After hearing directly from a few local organizations about the supply shortages they were facing, the Staten Island Delegation worked with Super Health Pharmacy to purchase a limited amount of  masks, gloves, thermometers, and hand sanitizer to distribute directly to our healthcare professionals in need.

This week, supplies were distributed directly to those on the front line at the following organizations:

Staten Island Elected Officials Announce Donation from Sir Gary Kong President of Global Hero Foundation of 40,000 surgical masks, 600 N95 Masks

3/24/2020

Joint statement by Borough President Oddo, Congressman Max Rose, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Senator Diane Savino, Senator Andrew Lanza, Assemblyman Michael Cusick, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, Assemblyman Mike Reilly, Assemblyman Charles Fall, Councilman Steven Matteo, Councilman Joe Borelli, and Councilwoman Debi Rose:

“We are joining together to thank the Global Hero Foundation for coming forward at this time of need. Founders Gary Kong and Staten Island native Billie Mitchell remind us that as New Yorkers and Americans, we come together in times of need. This donation of 40,000 surgical masks and 600 N95 masks will immediately help safeguard those on the front lines of this imminent crisis. We are working closely with medical personnel in our hospitals and nursing homes to meet their needs. Additionally, we want to be sure that bus drivers who are transporting essential personnel to and from their jobs have the much needed protection, as they drive their routes.”

Deliveries of these masks will be made to support the needs of both of our hospitals, Staten Island University Hospital and Richmond University Medical Center. The supplies will also be distributed to members of 1199SEIU and Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU). Staten Island Delegation calls dentist and physicians to donate unused PPE to supplement supply shortage

3/21/2020

Joint statement by Borough President Oddo, Congressman Max Rose, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Senator Diane Savino, Senator Andrew Lanza, Assemblyman Michael Cusick, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, Assemblyman Mike Reilly, Assemblyman Charles Fall, Councilman Steven Matteo, Councilman Joe Borelli, and Councilwoman Debi Rose:

"The situation surrounding Coronavirus is constantly evolving. What is clear is that the only way to protect the community from further spread is to stay home. Another thing that has become abundantly clear is that there is a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE is essential for healthcare workers to protect themselves so that they can continue to care for patients.

“With this in mind, in the spirit of community, we are asking any dentists or physicians who may be closing their offices during this time to donate their PPE so that we can continue to have our healthcare professionals safely care for ill patients."

Physician/dental offices interested in donating should visit www.statenislandusa.com/PPE and fill out the intake form. A staff member from Borough Hall will be in touch shortly to arrange pick up of your donations.

Staten Island Delegation:  We will never allow these Coronavirus SI Ferry cuts to be permanent

3/20/2020

Joint statement by Borough President Oddo, Congressman Max Rose, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Senator Diane Savino, Senator Andrew Lanza, Assemblyman Michael Cusick, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, Assemblyman Mike Reilly, Assemblyman Charles Fall, Councilman Steven Matteo, Councilman Joe Borelli, and Councilwoman Debi Rose in response to Mayor de Blasio’s announcement of a temporary reduction of Staten Island Ferry service, from four boats during rush hour to three in response to a 70% decrease in ridership due to the COVID-19 situation:

“Staten Island will do its part to be part of the solution, and to that end we will reluctantly understand these service reductions to the Staten Island Ferry during this crisis. But let us be very clear: we will never allow this, or any other administration, to undercut then Councilman Oddo's Local Law, which mandated half-hour service 24/7/365.

“Make no mistake, we are team players today and will be during this crisis, but we just do not trust the Department of Transportation. We know the history of this issue. They NEVER wanted to implement the second phase of the bill, which was originally enacted thanks to the work of former Council Speaker Chris Quinn, but was to be implemented by the de Blasio Administration.

“The transportation agency did not want to increase transportation options! In the end, it was the Mayor who overruled his own agency!  So forgive us for being vigilant, and for not trusting anyone or anything but our own perseverance.

“And let us say this: if any financial crisis carries on past the end of our terms, our successors will be just as rabid on the issue of transit equity as we are.”
