Staten Island Borough President Firebreaks Program

The East Shore of Staten Island is home to multiple properties that are in close proximity to several undeveloped wetland areas. Perennial wetland grasses called phragmites grow easily in these areas, and can pose a wildfire hazard if not mowed back.

The Borough President is concerned for the safety of constituents and their properties, and has reinstated a Firebreaks Program to address the issue. The goal of this Firebreaks program is to allow homeowners in target areas on the East Shore to mow the phragmites to create a firebreak area around their home to reduce the risk of damage to the property.

A permit is required to cut and/or mow phragmites adjacent to your house on adjoining properties owned by the city, state, or federal government. This permit is free to you, and BP Fossella has made it easy to obtain a Firebreaks Request form:
