This year, COVID-19 made it impossible for us to hold in-person events that we have been honored to host in the past. Due to these challenges, we needed to adapt and change our formats.
Below, please find ceremonies held virtually in 2020.
Postcards 9/11 Ceremony
Borough President James Oddo hosted the virtual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to remember the Staten Islanders we lost 19 years ago and to pay tribute to those First Responders who have subsequently died from their service at Ground Zero.
This program was live-streamed on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. It reflects the performances of previous years’ ceremonies, along with a reading of the names of the Staten Islanders who were lost on 9/11, as well as a reading of the names of the First Responders who have perished since that day. All the readings were recorded the week prior to the event by family and friends.
The Albert V. Maniscalco Award
The Albert V. Maniscalco Community Service Award was established in 1986 in honor of the ninth borough president. The award celebrates the civic-mindedness and tireless energy of individuals or organizations that work to help community members in need and to make Staten Island a better place.
On November 30, the Albert V. Maniscalco Award will be presented to Rolling Thunder Chapter 2. Please join us at statenislandusa.com/Maniscalco2020 for the ceremony.
The Patrick Daly Award
This award goes to two educators who exemplify the values of the fallen principal, who was gunned down 27 years ago in Red Hook, Brooklyn while searching for a student who had left the school building. The award was established shortly after Mr. Daly’s death and was revived in 2017 to honor his legacy of service to the community, his steadfast commitment to his students, and his leadership. The Award has been postponed to be sensitive to the time constraints of teachers with the increased challenges they are faced with this school year. It will be announced soon.
