TOURISM
The World is Discovering
 the Unexpected Borough

INITIATIVES / TOURISM
There’s been a renewed interest in Staten Island and its waterfront beyond the popular Staten Island Ferry. We're so much more than a free boat ride.

With that in mind, the Borough President’s Office is working diligently with citywide and local partners to be sure that the Island’s attractions and cultural organizations are not only ready for an influx of tourists, but will be able to maximize the opportunity.

With the support of NYC & Co., the city’s travel arm, the island’s attractions and cultural organizations have been working on selling themselves to tour operators, creating marketing materials and best practices for successful tourism as an economic driver.  A readiness campaign, “Tourism Ready,” has been hosted by NYC & Co, for the last year and continues to engage cultural organizations.

Our office is working extremely closely with NYC & Co., the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, Destination St. George, and an active group of cultural organizations and attractions to market the Island for future visitors. We engage regularly in hosting tour operators and journalists for tours of the Island’s cultural gems. We have created a “destination profile,” a document that provides a snapshot of the Island and its offerings, and avoids drilling us down to one or two “must see” things.

Our work group has established several itineraries for the Island, based on proximity, interest, and length of stay. These are all essential tools for working with the travel trade and we continue to engage the travel trade in a variety of ways, with the ongoing support of NYC & Co. and our partners, including Empire Outlets, which opened Spring 2019.

In addition, the office maintains the VISIT web site which details attractions on the Island and encourages tourists to visit.
