‘Check In. Check Up.’ Campaign Encourages Staten Islanders to Take Charge of their Health

10/5/2020

BP Oddo launches social media campaign reminding Staten Islanders to get yearly checkup, annual screenings that may have been missed during pandemic
Picture
For many, COVID-19 may have resulted in delayed doctor visits for checkups and annual screenings. Borough President James Oddo announced today the start of ‘Check In. Check Up.’, a campaign that reminds Staten Islanders to take charge of their health.

“For many of us, COVID-19 may have resulted in delayed doctor visits for checkups and annual screenings. This campaign encourages you to check in with yourself and your loved ones and schedule any missed checkup that may have happened this year. We want to remind you to stay on top of your health,” noted Borough President Oddo.

Borough Hall’s webpage, www.statenislandusa.com/checkin, includes tips for women and men on screenings to talk to your doctor about and risk factors to be aware of.

Annual screenings allow the chance to potentially detect illnesses early – when they can be easier to treat. This campaign encourages Staten Islanders to talk to their doctor about screenings and tests that may be relevant with their risk factors. Most doctor offices are accepting patients again. Contact your physician’s office to see what COVID-19 protocols may be in effect.

BP Oddo Partners with CVS, Rite Aid for “Family Flu Shot” Campaign

9/21/2020

Getting a Flu Shot this year is especially important to help people stay healthy and to ease the burden on our health care system

Borough President James Oddo has partnered with CVS and Rite Aid for a “Family Flu Shot” Campaign to encourage Staten Islanders to get their annual Flu Shot. Staten  Islanders can visit www.statenislandusa.com/flu2020 to a find location near them to make an appointment for a Flu Shot. New Yorkers can also text “FLU” to 877877 for more information about where to find flu shots close to home.  Many shots are free, while many providers also accept insurance.

This fall and winter, the flu virus and the virus that causes COVID-19 may both be spreading. For that reason, getting a flu shot will be more important than ever to help people stay healthy and to ease the burden on our health care system. Although the flu vaccine will not prevent COVID-19, it will help individuals stay healthy by decreasing the risk of getting sick and needing flu-related medical care.

“As we face another flu season while also battling COVID-19, this year it is especially important to get your annual flu shot. If you might be at risk of complications or are in close contact with friends and family members with underlying health conditions, take this step to not only protect yourself but protect those you care for,” said Borough President Oddo.

The seasonal flu (influenza) is an upper airway and lung infection that causes fever, cough, sore throat and can cause severe illness or complications like pneumonia and in some cases, death. Children may get sinus problems and ear infections. An annual flu shot is recommended for almost everyone 6 months and older. It is one of the best ways to reduce flu illnesses, hospitalizations and death from flu.

Certain groups of people have a higher risk of developing serious health conditions and complications from the flu, so it is especially important for them to get the flu shot - each year, as the shot is different depending on the strain of flu. Children younger than 5, especially those under 2; people 50 and older, especially those 65 and older; and pregnant women can be at increased risk of complications from the flu.

Additionally, those with any underlying medical conditions can be at increased risk, including:
  • Asthma, emphysema or any other chronic breathing disorders
  • Heart, kidney or liver disease
  • Blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia
  • Weakened immune system, from illness or medication
  • Neuromuscular disorders that interfere with breathing or the discharge of mucus
  • Long-term aspirin therapy in people under 19
  • Obesity (a Body Mass Index of 40 and over)
  • People living in nursing homes or other care facilities
  • American Indians and Alaskan Natives

Caregivers, healthcare workers, and those in close contact with people who belong to a high-risk group should be sure to get a flu shot each year.

It is estimated that every year in the United States, about 5% to 20% of the population gets flu, and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications. Each year, more than 2,000 New Yorkers die from flu-related illness.

Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to be recognized with Virtual Ceremony

9/4/2020

Virtual ceremony to honor those lost 19 years ago as well as the First Responders who perished subsequently due to their work at Ground Zero

In order to ensure the safety of all, Borough President James Oddo will host a virtual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to remember the Staten Islanders we lost 19 years ago and to pay tribute to those First Responders who have subsequently died from their service at Ground Zero on Friday, Sept. 11, 2020 at 6:30 PM.

This live-streamed virtual ceremony will reflect the performances of previous years’ ceremonies, reading of the names of the Staten Islanders who were lost on 9/11, as well as a reading of the names of the First Responders who have perished since that day by family and friends, recorded last week. A new video tribute will honor those we lost.

This ceremony can be viewed at 6:30 PM on our website statenislandusa.com/Sept11, on our Facebook Page @StatenIslandUSA, or on our YouTube Channel youtube.com/SIUSABP. It can also be viewed on Staten Island CTV.

As always, the Postcards Memorial site and the Staten Island First Responders Memorial is open to the public and will be so on Friday, September 11th. While at the site, masks must be worn and social distancing must be practiced. We will have designated times for both quiet reflection and socially distanced gathering on that day for those who wish to visit:

  • 9am to 12pm: Site open for quiet reflection
  • 12pm to 6:30pm: Site open; roses available from Borough Hall staff to be laid on the monument; musical selections playing nearby from past memorial ceremonies, designed to bring comfort
  • 6:30pm: The names of those lost will be read by family members and friends via broadcast on television screens at the memorial site; following the Tribute Readings, the Memorial Tribute Video will also play
  • 7pm: Quiet reflection, monument lit in red, white and blue

We want to extend a special thank you to those who have read the names of those we lost, which will be a very special part of this year’s virtual ceremony.

“As you know, it will be my great honor to host the Staten Island 9/11 Memorial Ceremony again this year, although we will do so virtually, as that is the only way to ensure the safety of all,” noted Borough President Oddo. “Although the event will be in a different format for this year, we will still join together to honor those we lost on that terrible day 19 years ago, and the First Responders who have passed since then as a result of their bravery on that day and in the days that followed. COVID-19 has presented us with an extraordinary challenge this year. We want to thank you for your understanding and cooperation and look forward to a time when we can be together again. Right now, I truly hope you find solace in the arrangements we have made.”

Please note that virtual ceremony will not be played at the site. The virtual ceremony, in its entirety, is available via the Internet and CTV.

BP Oddo announces “#outSIdeEATS” Social Media Campaign Supporting Local Eateries with Outdoor Dining

6/25/2020

Picture
Borough President James S. Oddo announced today that his office has launched the social media campaign #outSIdeEATS to support local eateries that have shifted to outdoor dining, as designated by Phase 2 of the State’s re-opening plan.

This social media campaign follows the successful #DeliverSI campaign, which supports eateries that shifted to delivery and takeout during COVID-19 PAUSE order.

The #outSIdeEATS campaign offers Staten Islanders the following comprehensive spreadsheet of local restaurants, bars and cafés with curb lane, sidewalk, backyard and/or patio seating. It can be found at: https://bit.ly/outSIdeEATS. This constantly updated list is designed for those who wish to partake in an outdoor dining experience.

“Our Borough Hall team is looking to replicate the success we had with our #DeliverSI initiative we started when restaurants were first forced to close. We unveiled #outSIdeEATS to tell you all the great Staten Island joints that are open and ready to serve with outdoor dining options. We continue to host the #DeliverSI list for takeout and delivery. But if you are among those who want to get to a restaurant now, we will have you covered,” said Staten Island Borough President Oddo.

Staten Islanders are encouraged to tag the Borough President’s Office @StatenIslUSA in the places they are dining and use the #outSIdeEATS hashtag to show support and raise awareness of those open for outside dining.

Any restaurant, bar or café that would like to be featured in the list are asked to contact Lauren Lefkowitz at llefkowitz@statenislandusa.com with the following information: zip code; restaurant name; address; phone number; type of dining (patio/sidewalk/street/parking lot); reservation requirements; takeout/delivery availability; days and hours; social media handles; website.

BP Oddo to Celebrate “Readers Are Leaders” Exceptional Readers with Virtual Magic Show

5/28/2020

Picture
Borough President James Oddo is pleased to announce his office will recognize this year’s “Readers Are Leaders” and “Readers Are Leaders Jr.” participants with a virtual magic show performed by Staten Island Author and Magician Mike Lane. The virtual magic show will take place on the Borough President Office’s Facebook Page, Staten Island USA, on Saturday, May 30, at 11:00am. Borough President Oddo encourages families around Staten Island to join in celebrating this year’s “Readers Are Leaders” and “Readers Are Leaders Jr.” participants.

“I’m grateful to continue the ‘Readers Are Leaders’ tradition that has helped foster Staten Island children’s love of reading for more than 20 years,” notes Borough President Jim Oddo. “Although this kind of recognition looks different than in years past, the sentiment is the same. We want to take the time to congratulate all of this year’s participants and hope you all continue to read and enjoy learning.”

“Readers are Leaders” challenges 4th grade classes in Staten Island’s public, parochial, and private schools to read a minimum of six books at grade level or above during the five-week period of February 17th – March 23rd. The “Readers Are Leaders Jr.” program runs concurrently to the fourth grade program. The first grade was challenged to read one book of their choice along with “I Am Enough” by Grace Byers, of which 2 copies were provided to first grade classrooms on Staten Island.

In prior years, students would submit a report on their favorite book read during the challenge and each school would pick one “Exception Reader” to receive an award at a ceremony in May. Due to the current situation, this year, the students will be virtually celebrated.

The challenge was started 24 years ago by then-Councilman Vito Fossella before being taken over by the Borough President’s Office. Since its inception in 1996, 4th graders have read more than 690,000 books for the annual challenge. “Readers Are Leaders” is sponsored by CTV, Barnes and Noble, and the Staten Island Yankees.

The following schools contacted the Borough President’s Office to inform us that their students participated in this year’s challenge:

Borough Hall Supports Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes, Super Health Pharmacy to Distribute Free PPE Today

5/15/2020

Borough President James Oddo is pleased to announce that his office will be helping Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes and Super Health Pharmacy to bring essential PPE to Richmond University Medical Center staff. Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes puts free personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies directly in the hands of NYC doctors, nurses, healthcare staff, frontline workers and those in need by parking its donation truck outside of medical centers and offering PPE to anyone with a hospital badge.

Today, Tuesday, May 12, starting at 1:30pm, Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes will park their donation truck outside of Richmond University Medical Center to distribute 4,000 kits and additional supplies to anyone with a hospital badge. The pre-packaged PPE kits include: 1 face shield, 1 KN95 and 7 surgical masks. In addition the volunteers will be refilling hand sanitizer bottles, handing out gowns and Tyvek coverings based on availability.

“Thank you to Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes and Super Health Pharmacy for including our office in this distribution effort for our frontline healthcare workers. We continue to  work collaboratively in an all-out effort with every possible source to find supplies for those helping our community through this crisis,” noted Borough President James Oddo.

Borough Hall is pleased to be involved in today’s effort, and is looking forward to future collaborative efforts with these organizations to bring PPE to Staten Island’s frontline workers.

This fundraiser, organized by Rhonda Roland Shearer on behalf of Art Science Research Laboratory Inc. in partnership with Housing Works, has distributed PPE to more than 15K healthcare workers and those at risk across the city and has purchased more than 1 million PPEs to date. The initiative, which was initially paid for by Rhonda’s own home equity line, is being funded via donations raised on www.cutredtape4heroes.org.

“We are heartened that Borough President James Oddo is going to help and distribute PPE supplies today. The needs for PPE have been huge here in Staten Island,” said Rhonda Roland Shearer, founder of Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes and Director of Art Science Research Laboratory.  “Beyond PPE, we are bringing dignity and respect to these frontline workers and saying to them that we see you, we thank you, and we have your back."

Super Health Pharmacy, a local Staten Island pharmacy, has provided trucking, banners, and PPE discounts to the project.

“Super Health Pharmacy is super excited to be able to help out neighbors at Richmond University Medical Center during this time in partnership with Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes. This is what it is all about, helping our community and getting things done,” said Mayank Parikh, Super Health Pharmacy.

Borough President Focused on Testing for Staten Islanders in COVID-19 Fight

5/8/2020

Borough President Oddo continues to maintain a focus on expanding COVID-19 testing options for Staten Islanders, and has clarified today with the public the differences between  Diagnostic Testing and Antibody Blood Testing.

"We are now at the phase of this pandemic where we see that people are recovering from COVID-19 and we are eager to return to our normal lives. As eager as we might be, it's important to continue to protect ourselves with social distancing and face coverings and gloves while in public. Now is the time for antibody testing and that's happening in numerous ways on Staten Island," explained Borough President James Oddo. "It is especially important to note that even if you test positive for antibodies, evidence that you have been exposed to COVID-19, it may not make you immune to any future strains of the virus. We must continue to be vigilant about protecting ourselves and others."

What is COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing, and what does it tell you?
  • If you have symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, aches, persistent cough, loss of senses of smell and taste) and go to get tested, you may receive a Nasal Swab Molecular Test.
  • This test will confirm, with a high degree of accuracy, whether you are POSITIVE or NEGATIVE for the virus AT THE TIME OF THE TEST.
  • Your provider or the lab will usually contact you with results by phone and can advise you on how long to quarantine, based on the results of your test. The results could take 3-5 days, during which you must self-quarantine.

What is Antibody Blood Testing:
  • Antibody blood tests can indicate if you had the virus in the past, whether or not you experienced symptoms.
  • This test detects the “IgG” antibodies, which indicate that you had the virus in the past, and “IgM” antibodies, which may indicate more recent infection
  • If you did have symptoms, you should wait at least 2 weeks after the end of symptoms to get the antibody test, as it can take this long for the body to produce “IgG” antibodies. This antibody test is nearly 100% accurate when used more than 14 days after the end of symptoms, which is why the timing is important.
  • There is substantial evidence that people may have been infected without ever being symptomatic. Depending on the timing of the infection, the antibody blood test would detect the “IgG” antibodies in this population.
  • Patients who believe they were exposed and want to be tested should discuss their situation with their healthcare provider.

What does Antibody Blood Testing tell you?
  • You may have read or heard that the antibody test may provide evidence of future immunity. While this is often the case with other viruses, the science is not yet clear on this particular virus.
  • At this point, antibody blood tests will indicate only that you did or did not have exposure to COVID-19 in the past.
  • Currently we DO NOT know if having antibodies will prevent you from getting a future SARS CoV 2 coronavirus infection.
  • While some of these tests have been approved by the FDA, for emergency use in a pandemic setting, we must stress that, like flu, strep, and many other widely used diagnostic tests, they are not 100% accurate.

For a list of locations offering testing on Staten Island, including antibody tests, please visit
https://www.statenislandusa.com/covidtesting.html.

Borough President Oddo is pleased to share the progress of the collaborative effort with Richmond University Medical Center, Staten Island’s skilled nursing facilities, and Chembio to bring antibody blood tests to Staten Island’s nursing homes, as well as RUMC staff. RUMC will be running and processing the tests, at its own cost and by its own lab technicians, for both their staff and for nursing facility tests. RUMC has quickly ramped up and trained its staff, completed the initial validation of the test kits, and begun testing staff for the antibodies.

This is an important step in beating COVID-19, and the Borough President expresses his gratitude for the partnerships to make this happen.

Thus far, six RUMC staff members in the Department of Laboratory Medicine have been trained to analyze the tests. Currently, RUMC is testing their medical personnel and staff, averaging about 125 tests per day. To date, 700 tests have been completed.

At this time, the collaborative is working on completing required paperwork as well as memorandums of understanding with the skilled nursing facilities and respective partners so that the testing can begin at their sites.

“We are very excited about this partnership with Borough President Oddo and Chembio labs,” Richmond University Medical Center President and Chief Executive Officer, Daniel J., Messina, PhD, FACHE, said.  “The safety and health of our staff on the frontlines of this pandemic is always our highest priority. They are caring for hundreds of COVID-19 positive patients in various stages of the virus. On behalf of everyone at Richmond University Medical Center, I would like to thank Borough President James Oddo and Chembio for helping us secure access to this new testing capability.”

“We are grateful for the support our community has shown this program that allows us to offer free meals to our healthcare workers as they fight this crisis on the frontline. The work our nurses and front line healthcare workers do each day is nothing short of heroic. Any and every donation is welcome so we may continue to show our appreciation for their daily strength and caring. Thank you to UFT and the SI Chamber of Commerce for continuing to partner with us to meet this need,” said Borough President Jim Oddo.

“You can always count on Staten Islanders to come together when you need them the most. It’s been wonderful to see so much generosity as both businesses and residents continue to contribute to this initiative. We send a big thank you to all of our essential workers who have been working tirelessly to take care of our community,” said Linda Baran, President & CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce.  “The Chamber thanks Borough President Oddo and our partners, we are honored to take part in an effort that supports our hospital workers while supporting our local businesses as well.”

“We are proud to support this wonderful initiative and thankful for the opportunity to provide food to our frontline workers, who are beyond courageous.  They selflessly perform their jobs to keep us healthy and safe, and we thank you!” said Carol T. Decina, Manager of Customer and Community Engagement, nationalgrid.

Borough President Oddo, the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, and UFT also extend their gratitude to those who have used their respective platforms to promote the “Feeding Our Frontline” Initiative, including the Staten Island Advance for covering the program on multiple occasions, as well as those in the Staten Island Delegation and all community partners and constituents who have shared the donation link to help get the word out to the greater Staten Island universe.
