“We are hoping that by doing this, we, as Italian-Americans, can share our culture and history not only with other Italian-Americans, but with all of Staten Island,” BP Oddo said. “We are also open to suggestions from the community in order to make it really special.”
“It’s time for a fresh start,” said Council Member Steve Matteo. “It’s about getting Staten Islanders to come out to Richmond Town, stay all day, and celebrate Italian-American heritage.”
“This is an exciting opportunity for Italian-Americans to learn about where they’ve come from and reconnect with their history,” said State Senator Diane Savino.
As part of the event, Lois and Richard Nicotra are sponsoring free musical performances by “The People’s Tenor” Michael Amante as well as “Song, Shtick, and Sinatra” from entertainer Joe Piscopo.
Borough President Oddo called on community organizations for their input and participation in the event.
The venue was a no-brainer, according to the BP. Weaving the Italian American experience with the American experience that Historic Richmond Town preserves just makes sense, he said. He also thanked Ed Wiseman, CEO of Historic Richmond Town, for his leadership and for being a willing partner in this new endeavor.
“We want to bring everyone together,” noted Wiseman, who has had great success with events like the NYC Chili Cookoff and NYC BBQ Cookoff. “We intend to romance you and fill you with Italian-American culture.”
Former Borough President Ralph Lamberti said, “I invite all Staten Islanders to participate in this event, because they will find out that no matter what their ethnic background is, we all have more in common than differences.”
In addition, the newly formed New Dorp Lane LDC announced that they will be hosting their own Family Day Festival on Monday, October 13th, in the parking lot of Santander Bank on New Dorp Lane. The merchants of New Dorp Lane have been engaged in an effort, led by Council Member Matteo and the BP, to increase economic activity on this important commercial strip.
