Borough President James S. Oddo will present several events during the month of November for Veterans, in honor of November 11, Veteran’s Day.  The first, on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 11AM, is the opening reception for a new art show, “Veteran Art Now: A Retrospective of the American Veteran,” by Veterans of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. The show will be open at Borough Hall from Nov. 5 through Dec. 3 during business hours.

On November 7, a free workshop, “Acing the Interview,” will be held at WorkForce1, open to all Staten Island veterans and their spouses. The workshop will be presented by Peter Romano, USMC, and cover resume writing, job hunting tips and includes an "Acing the Interview" class.  This workshop will take place at the WorkForce1 Center, located on the third floor of 120 Stuyvesant Place, St. George.

On November 14, another free workshop featuring the Department of Veterans Affairs will be held at Borough Hall in Room 122, from 10AM to 2PM The focus will be on applying for and using benefits, other benefits issues and homeless services. There will be a Q&A after and time for one-on-one support.

“Our veterans who so bravely served our country deserve our support,” said Borough President Oddo. “I am committed to helping all veterans, including those from the ‘Greatest Generation’ who fought in World War II and Korea, our brave Vietnam Vets, who have never received the honor for their service they deserve, and those who have served in more recent times in Iraq and Afghanistan. The art show that will take place in Borough Hall during November will honor our veterans and our free workshops will provide them with access to information and services they need. I encourage veterans to participate.”

BP Oddo to announce ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ to help local businesses keep our borough clean

10/9/2014

Borough President James Oddo, along with sponsors Northfield Bank, SI Chamber of Commerce, Shamrock Paint, Home Depot and Costco, are teaming up to encourage local businesses to take part in “Operation Clean Sweep.” The goal of the program is to reduce litter and to help keep Staten Island clean.

As part of the program, local businesses that join will receive a branded broom and pan, as well as recognition from the Borough President. Although required by law to clean their businesses and 18 inches into the street, the reality is that many businesses do not. Those who join Operation Clean Sweep will pledge that they will clean in front of their stores every day to help keep Staten Island clean. All Staten Island businesses will be urged to join this program.

“We need to engage more of our small businesses. We don't want to lead with the stick,” noted the Borough President at a press conference at Honor Wines on Thursday. “Small business owners did not create this problem but we all need to be part of the solution.”

BP Oddo Announces New Director of Education

10/1/2014

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014, Staten Island Borough President James S. Oddo announced that he has appointed Rose Kerr as his new Director of Education. In this role, Ms. Kerr will advise the Borough President on all education related issues and develop new and innovative ideas and proposals in education. She will also serve as a liaison between the Borough President and key Department of Education personnel, as well as local school leaders.

Ms. Kerr has served as an educator and school administrator, her last post as Principal of the Staten Island School for Civic Leadership. During her tenure there, the school was Staten Island’s highest ranking NYC Public School in the category of Elementary, Middle, and K-8 schools. Before working at the School of Civic Leadership, Ms. Kerr served as the Assistant Principal of Egbert Intermediate School and P.S. 22 for 10 years. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Teaching Matters’ Elizabeth Rohatyn Prize, New York Urban League Education Award, UFT’s School Partnership Award, and NYC Public School’s Principal’s Leadership Award.

“It’s clear to me that we need a perspective on staff that only an educator can bring,” said Borough President Oddo. “Rose Kerr brings the passion and knowledge we were looking for. We’re doing great work now, but we know we can do even better by bringing her on to our team.”

“I’m thrilled to work with someone who has the vision for schools and education that the Borough President does,” Ms. Kerr said.

Ms. Kerr is also a current member of Borough President Oddo’s Advisory Council on Education.
