“This is truly a homecoming,” Oddo said, standing beside Vito Picone, front man of the Doo Wop band Vito Picone and The Elegants. Picone, whose band hit number 1 in 1958 with their hit, “Little Star,” used to practice under the boardwalk with his friends and bandmates – most of whom grew up in South Beach.
While some of the band members have changed, the music remains the same – and wildly popular among Staten Islanders.
“We know that this genre was missing from our schedule and we wanted to invite this Staten Island favorite back to the beach,” Oddo said.
Picone is happy to be back, calling the concert, “The Boys Are Back in Town.” The concert will be held at Splaza, adjacent to Freedom Circle by the Midland Beach Promenade on Saturday, August 23 at 7 PM.
“We are very excited,” noted Picone. “It has been 20 years since we’ve played the beach.” In addition to The Elegants, The Expressions will also play that evening.
