Students Take the Stage at Young Writers Showcase

4/17/2015

On Friday, April 17th, BP Oddo hosted his first ever Young Writers Showcase at the Williamson Theater at the College of Staten Island. The event was designed to shine a light on students who excel in writing and to encourage them to continue honing their craft.

The Young Writers Showcase was the final event in the Young Writers Roundtable series, which began in November. Of the students who participated, 26 students from 10 schools submitted works to be considered for the Young Writers Showcase. Selected students were chosen to read their original works, and all participants were recognized for their efforts.

“I am a big fan of words. Whether to make you laugh, to make you cry, to inform you, to take you away—I've always had that love affair with words," BP Oddo shared with the students. "To have young people on Staten Island who share the love for that and be so talented in using them is just a wonderful thing."

Special guests “Magic” Mike Lane, Sukanya Krishnan, Kirya Traber, and Jay Miller also spoke on the importance of writing.

The event was sponsored by Northfield Savings Bank and the Northfield Bank Foundation.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Empire Outlets

4/16/2015

On Thursday, April 16th, BP Oddo took part in the groundbreaking ceremony for Empire Outlets, New York City’s first outlet center. The ceremony took place at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

BFC Partners have already named 20 retail stores that will be part of the center, with 80 more stores and restaurants to be announced. Along with other development projects along the North Shore, the Empire Outlets project is intended to revitalize the waterfront.

“I have the privilege of working a stone’s throw away from what is the epicenter of the transformation of Staten Island’s northern waterfront,” said BP Oddo. “Empire Outlets is an essential part of the ‘Core Four’ projects that total nearly a billion dollars of private investment along this corridor. The project is an economic development bonanza in and of itself, but its benefits can grow exponentially as this trailblazing endeavor encourages future investments, large and small, in our community. The upside for Staten Island is huge and I am proud to continue to work with BFC and our partners and colleagues in maximizing this critical moment for Staten Island”

The outlet center is scheduled to open in 2016.

BP Oddo hosts Litter Summit and issues his 2015 Litter Report

On April 14, 2015, Borough President Oddo hosted the annual Litter Summit, a meeting that brought together elected officials, city agencies, local business owners, and community groups with the common goal of tackling the Island’s litter problem. Participants devised a plan to remove litter from the community while discouraging Staten Islanders from littering in the future.

Council Members Steven Matteo, Debi Rose and Vincent Ignizio have allocated funds to continue litter cleanups, and the organization Where-To-Turn will provide volunteers to clean. Other community groups have also expressed interest in working with the BP’s office to address the problem. Future initiatives include the Adopt-A-Street program with DOT, the Adopt-A Basket program with the Department of Sanitation, and an educational component in schools.

“Litter begets litter. We will have a dirtier community if we don't do something about it,” said BP Oddo. “While not all Staten Islanders caused this problem, we’re going to need their help to be part of the solution.”

BP Oddo’s Clean Team has already begun cleanups around the borough and has 150 locations on the agenda to clean between now and November. If you know of a location that needs to be cleaned, send the address to Aesposito@StatenIslandUSA.com.

The Borough President has issued his 2015 Litter Report, read it here.
