“Readers are Leaders” challenges 4th grade classes in Staten Island’s public, parochial and private schools to read a minimum of six books at grade level or above during the five-week period of February 12th – March 18th. Since its inception in 1996, 4th graders have read more than 60,000 books for the annual challenge. Magician Mike Lane performed a special show to kick off the event. His books, “The Magic Shop Series,” are ideal for fourth graders.
“I’m so proud to continue this challenge, which has encouraged so many Staten Island students to read over the years,” noted BP Oddo. “This year, we have some special additions planned to celebrate the program’s 20th anniversary.”
This year, for the Challenge’s 20th anniversary, another element has been added to the challenge, courtesy of author/magician Mike Lane. Any student who reads Mike’s book series, The Magic Shop series, and writes a book report about one of the books will be considered for a special prize. Mike will personally review these book reports and select another winner. The student who is selected will win a special magic show performance for his/her school!
“Readers Are Leaders” is sponsored by BP Oddo, CTV, Barnes & Noble and Macmillan Publishing. Magician Mike Lane will perform a special show at the Barnes & Noble store on Monday, Feb. 15 at 2:30 PM. All are welcome. For a voucher which will contribute 20% of your B&N purchase next week to the program, please print the voucher and bring it with you to the store.
