For the past 6 months, COVID-19 has put all of our lives on hold. This means that many of us have fallen behind on taking care of our health and on our routine screenings, while we focused on quarantining and protecting ourselves and our loved ones from COVID-19. YOU are important and so is your health. Now is the time to refocus on yourself and your wellbeing.

Check In

Borough President Oddo reminds you to take a look at your own health, and any appointments you may have had scheduled that got missed over the last several months. Do you need to check in with your primary care physician? Do you need to get to the dentist? Is there a screening that should be done? Is your mental health where you want it to be?

Check Up

Schedule those appointments. YOUR health matters.
Prioritize your health and if you have not done so already, make an appointment with your health care provider. If you do not have a health care provider, call 311 or  -- (can add H+H 24/7 line)

Prepare your checklist of items to discuss with your primary care physician:
Talk to your healthcare provider about:
  • Any concerns about COVID-19;
  • If you are sick or have been sick;
  • If stress is getting in the way of your daily activities;
  • if you have a health condition, such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure or obesity, to develop or maintain a plan to keep it under control.
  • About your routine screenings that may be due. These will vary depending on your age, gender, family history, and individual risk factors.
  • Getting your yearly flu shot
Take care of your body and mind
There are things you can do right now to get control of your physical and mental wellbeing:
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Get and stay active regularly in your home or outside your home.
  • Eat heart-healthy, well-balanced meals and snacks.
  • Take care of your mental health:  Stay connected with family and friends.. Find healthy ways to manage stress.
  • Practice good sleep habits to improve your mental and physical health, and boost your immune system: Follow a routine for going to sleep—be consistent going to bed and getting up—even on weekends. Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep.
  • Monitor alcohol intake and avoid illicit drugs, including drugs that are not prescribed to you.
  • Look out for your lungs: Try to quit smoking and vaping.  Smoking weakens your lungs and puts you at a much higher risk of having serious complications.
  • Slow and stop the spread of COVID-19 while protecting yourself.

Check Up: Get Screened

Depending on your age, gender, and risk factors, it may be time for screening for diseases, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases.

According to the US Preventive Services Task Force, screenings should be done at the following ages, but talk to your doctor if you have concerns. Click here to view the chart.
