On the Fence: The DOT's Urban Art Program at the Staten Island Ferry
A detail from The Department of Transportation's Urban Art Program at the St. George Ferry Terminal
A blighted section of fencing at the St. George Ferry Terminal is now sporting a brand new look. An artwork project that is part of The Department of Transportation's (DOT) Urban Art Program is the first one to arrive on Staten Island. The Urban Art Program provides opportunities to recognize emerging NYC artists and showcase their work. For the program, DOT works with communities, artists, arts organizations and other nonprofits to install artwork up to 11 months on DOT properties.
The artist is Abby Goldstein, with assistance from Michael Koehler, who did the maps. Custom Signs Inc., a small graphics business on Staten Island, is the fabricator for this project and translated the final design into a vinyl mesh material to cover the full length of a fence leading to the ferry terminal. The design features an abstract, colorful representation of the Staten Island shoreline. There are photos of "old Staten Island" also featured in the design. Come "walk on by"!
