On Wednesday, December 9th, Borough President Oddo hosted a Menorah Lighting Ceremony outside Borough Hall to celebrate Hanukkah. NYPD Assistant Chief Edward Delatorre joined Rabbi Eli Kogan of the Jewish Russian Learning Center of Staten Island to help light the menorah. Rabbi Abraham Biderman of Oorah spoke about the history and meaning of the holiday. Students from Congregation Toras Emes Hebrew School and the Theatre Brats performed Hanukkah songs at the event.
“There is a lot of darkness out there in the world right now, so I’m happy to host a celebration of a holiday that honors the joy and light in our lives,” said Borough President Oddo.
The event was sponsored by the Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island.
On Tuesday, December 1st, 2015, BP Oddo joined with the North Shore Business Association to host a Christmas Tree Lighting outside Borough Hall. In spite of bad weather, the event was filled with music and holiday cheer.
Children and their families were treated to performances from the Curtis High School Wind Pipe Orchestra, the St. George Theatre Choir, the Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre Company, The Theatre Brats, and Al Lambert. Families were treated to hot chocolate, courtesy of The Gavel Grill. Santa Claus joined BP Oddo to light the tree and give out books to the children who attended.
“The holidays are a time for all of us to come together and enjoy the spirit of the season,” said Borough President Oddo. “We are happy to welcome everyone to Borough Hall to celebrate Christmas and the holiday season this year.”
Borough Hall will host a Menorah Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday, December 9th at 6:30pm at Borough Hall Plaza. The event, which is sponsored by the Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island, is open to the public.
