B.P. Molinaro applauds commissioner Sadik-Khan on neighborhood traffic safety initiative

Instructs Community Boards to identify “Slow Zone” locations on Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today applauded Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan on her agency’s new neighborhood safety initiative, which implements “traffic calming” measures such as a 20 mph speed limit in areas designated as “slow zones,” that include schools and senior centers.

“I commend Commissioner Sadik-Khan on this common-sense initiative that is long overdue,” said Molinaro. “It’s a great idea whose time has come, especially here on Staten Island, a somewhat suburban community where the number-one problem is traffic.

“Traffic-calming devices such as additional signage and speed bumps have proven to be an effective deterrent to speeding and reckless driving,” Molinaro added. “The additional speed zones would further improve the quality of life in our communities and would prevent the occurrence of traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

“Therefore, I have instructed our three Community Boards to identify locations that have experienced above-average accident rates and apply for ‘slow zones’ in those areas,” Molinaro continued. “It will take careful planning to create these zones and the Community Boards should hold public hearings.”

“I thank Commissioner Sadik-Khan for her responsiveness on these matters, and I look forward to working with her on this effort to enhance roadway safety for Staten Island motorists and pedestrians,” Molinaro concluded.
