B.P. Molinaro presents Sanitation Department with last of three snow plow/road salt vehicles

Multi-purpose Haulster trucks now in all three Staten Island Sanitation Garages

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – With another brutally cold and snowy winter in the forecast, Borough President James P. Molinaro today presented the Department of Sanitation with a newly-purchased Haulster vehicle to complete its Staten Island fleet of snow plow/road salt trucks.

The $134,000 vehicle is the last of three that Borough President Molinaro has purchased for the DSNY over the last few years, which salts and plows narrow streets – of which Staten Island has many – as well as crosswalks and bus stops. During the remainder of the year, the vehicle is used as a small dump truck for litter patrols.

“After one of the snowiest winters in history, the forecasters predict that we’re in for yet another harsh winter,” said Molinaro. “So I am pleased to assist ‘New York’s Strongest’ by adding a third new Haulster vehicle to complete Staten Island’s fleet. Our Borough has more than 1,500 miles of road, including 744 miles of side streets. Helping Sanitation fulfill their duties makes our roads more passable and safer. And when the Haulster truck is not salting and plowing streets, it’s picking up litter and maintaining Staten Island’s reputation as the cleanest borough in New York City.”

Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty said, “We thank Borough President Molinaro for his continuing commitment in supporting the Department of Sanitation in its critical role of providing quality service to Island residents. This Haulster vehicle is the third purchased by the Borough President for the DSNY. We now have one in each of our three Island garages allowing us to get plows and salt into narrow streets across the Island.”

At the press conference in front of Borough Hall, Molinaro turned over the Haulster keys to Commissioner Doherty and Deputy Borough Chief Matthew Malloy.
