Borough President Molinaro’s “Clean Team” improves appearance of Mid-Island roads
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—As part of ongoing efforts to clean up roadways in Staten Island, Borough President James P. Molinaro announced today that his “Clean Team” has removed overgrown brush, litter, and debris from more than 8 locations since November, most recently along Manor Road and Brielle Avenue in Sea View.
“Like many roads across our Borough, Manor Road and Brielle Avenue are frequent sites of illegal dumping, overgrown brush, and litter,” Molinaro said. “There was even a car frame broken into pieces. The Department of Sanitation has removed the car frame, and I would like to thank Chief Ralph Reed for his assistance with this location.”
The Clean Team will continue to work on Manor Road and Brielle Avenue in the coming weeks. Since last fall, the Clean Team has cleaned roadsides in the St. George area, including the main corridors of Richmond Terrace, Bay Street, Hyatt Street, and Stuyvesant Place, in addition to their work in the Mid-Island near the Greenbelt.
The Clean Team, which was previously comprised of inmates from the now-closed Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, is once again able to tackle our Island’s litter and overgrown brush thanks to a partnership with CASES (Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services). CASES is run under the auspices of New York City Criminal Court, and serves low-level offenders from Staten Island, providing them with the opportunity to do community service as an alternative to incarceration.
The Borough President’s staff, in partnership with CASES and with assistance from the Department of Sanitation, will continue to undertake roadside clean-ups, weather permitting, throughout the winter.
