B.P. Molinaro announces City moving forward with his Todt Hill Road realignment proposal
Long-awaited project will expedite left-turn lane at Circle Road near SI Academy
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today announced that the hazardous stretch of Todt Hill Road that disabled a dozen cars due to a giant pothole has for years been the subject of his office’s Todt Hill Road realignment proposal, and it is finally moving forward as a City-funded capital project to begin construction next year.
“Yesterday’s pothole accidents just underscores how dangerous this location is,” said Molinaro. “As motorists try to make a left-turn onto Circle Road, other cars try to drive around them, and that causes many safety and infrastructure problems. I commend the Department of Transportation for quickly repairing the pothole overnight and for working with me on what will be a long-term solution.”
In 1997, the Borough President’s Office proposed a realignment of the dangerous curve on Todt Hill Road between the Saint Francis Seminary and Circle Road. In 2009, the DOT and Department of Design and Construction worked with Borough President Molinaro on a modified plan to simply create a left-turn lane at Circle Road to make conditions safer and less congested.
“Traffic in this area has increased tremendously over the past 12 years, and I would like to thank Mayor Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler and his staff for continuing to work with me to expedite road widenings that are crucial to relieving traffic congestion on Staten Island,” said Molinaro.
The $900,000 capital construction project to establish a left-turn lane at Circle Road, near Staten Island Academy, is currently scheduled for August 2011.
