B.P. Molinaro calls for the posting of street addresses at construction sites

Cites safety concerns resulting from lack of visible street numbers

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today called upon property owners to immediately post street addresses at all construction sites that have been issued a house number by the Borough President’s Office.

“Properties under construction often represent a ‘dead zone’ in the street numbering system, which can cause confusion or a delay in the arrival time of emergency responders,” Molinaro said.  “On larger streets with multiple street frontages, the numbering system can disappear for more than a block.”

“My office has reported this concern to City agencies, including the Department of Buildings,” Molinaro said.  “It is my hope that we can work together to address this safety concern.”

“Posting house numbers in plain sight on a construction fence or elsewhere visible from the street will protect the safety of the general public as well as persons employed at construction and demolition sites.  The rules for all properties are straight-forward and require the visibility of street numbers.  These standards should also apply for construction sites,” Molinaro said.

“We should take every possible step in assisting first responders to quickly find the location of an emergency,” Molinaro said. “Take the recent collapse of the Cromwell Center.  How many people can tell you the address there? Any location that has been issued an address by my office should post the designated house numbers immediately, whether the building is under construction or completed,” Molinaro concluded.
