B.P. Molinaro seeks input for future North Shore Rail park-and-ride locations

Asks community leaders, elected officials, and constituents to suggest vacant parcels of land along route

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.--  Borough President James P. Molinaro today announced that his office is reviewing potential park-and-ride sites along the 5.1 mile North Shore Rail corridor, and he invites elected officials, community leaders, and constituents to suggest possible locations.

“I am confident that the North Shore Rail will ultimately be revived for passenger service—the need is too great and the benefit is obvious,” Molinaro said.  “However now is the time to plan ahead wisely for park-and-ride locations to serve the passenger line.”

“On Staten Island, park-and-rides have proven highly successful in keeping cars off of our roads and highways and encouraging Borough residents to use mass transit,” Molinaro said.  “The park-and-ride at South Beach, which was suggested by my office, is a case in point.  It is jammed with cars which otherwise would be on our roads or parked on neighborhood streets or in front of businesses. We must be proactive. The value of adjacent property will only increase once the rail line is reactivated.  Now is the time to acquire property.”

“I am reaching out to my fellow elected officials, community leaders, and constituents on the North Shore to help identify vacant parcels of land near the rail tracks that can be purchased by the City and converted into park-and-rides,” Molinaro said.  “Community input is essential in making the revitalization of the North Shore Rail Line a success, and I look forward to the day that passenger service is once again restored to the North Shore,” Molinaro concluded.

To suggest a vacant parcel of land for conversion to a park-and-ride, please call the Borough President’s HelpLine at 718-816-2000.
