Borough President Molinaro announces the completion of traffic improvements at Miller Field
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today announced that the new entrance and parking lot at Miller Field, which will provide traffic relief to the streets surrounding the area, will open this Saturday, April 18th, to coincide with the Spring sports season. The new entrance, which leads directly to the additional parking lot, is located at the end of Father Capodanno Boulevard. The project was funded with $500,000 from the Borough President’s Office.
“This is the end result of smart planning,” Molinaro said. “For many years now, traffic heading to Miller Field has caused backups at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and New Dorp Lane, in addition to clogging residential side streets, because there was no entrance to the park from Father Capodanno Boulevard. Now, motorists have that option, and hundreds of cars each weekend will be removed from Hylan Boulevard and New Dorp Lane,” Molinaro said.
“I would like to thank the Department of Transportation, specifically Commissioner Sadik-Khan and Borough Commissioner Tom Cocola, as well as the National Parks Service for their help throughout this project,” Molinaro said. “This is another example of thinking outside-the-box on traffic solutions, which has been a program of mine since I took office in 2002. Staten Islanders comprise 5% of the City of New York’s population, but have 17% of the City’s registered vehicles. Thinking outside-of-the-box has yielded innovative traffic solutions, and will continue to play a major part in helping to lessen our Borough’s traffic issues,” Molinaro concluded.
