B.P. Molinaro calls upon little leagues to postpone night games during extreme heat wave

Cites health of children, draw on power system

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today is asking all little league and other youth sports teams who have outdoor games scheduled for tonight to postpone them until there is a break in the extreme heat that our Island is experiencing.

“Con Edison has asked residents and organizations to conserve energy in an effort to avoid brownouts, and the spotlights at our baseball fields draw a huge amount of power,” Molinaro said. “Also, it is dangerous for even the healthiest of Islanders to participate in extended physical activities in this weather, so for the health of our children and for the sake of saving power, any scheduled games should be postponed.”

“I have spoken to Con Ed, and they are in agreement with me that postponing the games is the best course of action,” Molinaro said.

“I encourage team managers and coaches to heed Con Ed’s request for conservation, and hope that they will err on the side of caution to protect the health and safety of our children,” Molinaro concluded.
