B.P. Molinaro presents Sanitation Department with new snow plow/road salt vehicle
Multi-purpose haulster truck ideal for plowing Island’s many narrow streets
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Following the snowiest January in city history and President Obama’s disaster declaration for Staten Island, Borough President James P. Molinaro today presented the Department of Sanitation with a new Haulster vehicle to augment its fleet.
The $127,000 vehicle is one of two that Borough President Molinaro recently purchased for the DSNY, which salts and plows narrow streets – of which Staten Island has many – as well as crosswalks and bus stops. During the remainder of the year, the vehicle is used as a small dump truck for litter patrols.
“Winter is not over yet, and another storm could be just around the corner,” said Molinaro. “So I am pleased to assist ‘New York’s Strongest’ by adding this new Haulster vehicle to Staten Island’s fleet. Our Borough has more than 1,500 miles of road, including 744 miles of side streets. Helping Sanitation fulfill their duties makes our roads more passable and safer. And when the Haulster truck is not salting and plowing streets, it’s picking up litter and maintaining Staten Island’s reputation as the cleanest borough in New York City.”
Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty said, “Every piece of equipment the Department has on hand is essential when it comes to fighting snow storms. We would like to thank Borough President Molinaro for his continued support of the DSNY through his generous allocation of funds for this new multi-purpose haulster. It will complement the fleet of other vehicles here on Staten Island that the Borough President has funded over the years in order to improve our ability to better serve all Islanders.”
At the press conference in front of Borough Hall, Molinaro turned over the Haulster keys to Commissioner Doherty and Borough Chief Ralph Reed.
