Borough President Molinaro announces capital funding for Castleton Park apartments
Allocates $400,000 for security system at Mitchell-Lama complex in St. George
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today announced the allocation of $400,000 from his FY ’09 capital budget for a security system at the Castleton Park Apartments, a Mitchell-Lama complex in St. George.
At the request of the Castleton Park Tenants Association, Molinaro provided the funding toward the purchase and installation of security cameras for the 18-story, 454-apartment complex for low- and middle-income families.
“Public safety must remain our highest priority,” said Molinaro. “The tenants of Castleton Park deserve a safe environment in which to raise their families, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to help make the apartments a better, safer place in which to live.
“My office has been in contact with the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development, and they have indicated that they will be assigning a project manager in the near future,” Molinaro added. “This will be a significant first step in what I hope to be an expedient completion of the project.”
Castleton Park Tenants Association co-chairs Judy Montanez and Sharon Valentin said, “This is indeed great news! We had chosen 2008 as the year to address the issue of poor security at our complex and make the matter of public safety for all the tenants a priority. With the increase in vandalism, dangerous fires, and crime in the neighborhood, we demanded a complete revamping of security immediately.
“We went on a venture to seek funds by writing to all our elected officials, and the Borough President heard our plea,” the co-chairs added. “Words cannot express our appreciation for his consideration of our security surveillance needs. The tenants couldn’t be happier.”
