B.P. Molinaro announces more good news for s89 bus riders – joint fare tickets!

Metrocard/Hudson-Bergen light rail tickets will save commuters time and money

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today announced a groundbreaking agreement between the MTA and NJ Transit that allows Staten Island and New Jersey commuters to buy a joint monthly ticket for service on both the MTA NYC Transit bus route and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.

The joint MetroCard/Hudson-Bergen Light Rail ticket contains both an Unlimited Ride MetroCard to pay the bus fare on the S89 or other NYC Transit local bus routes, and a HBLR flash pass for display on the light rail. The cost of this combined S89/HBLR monthly pass is $134.

“I’m delighted to announce more good news for S89 bus riders,” said Molinaro. “After nearly 10 years of effort by my office, the MTA -- under the progressive leadership of Executive Director Lee Sander -- successfully created the S89, connecting Staten Island to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Now, the joint MetroCard/Hudson-Bergen Light Rail ticket will not only save commuters time, but money as well.

“I would like to thank former Bayonne Mayor Joseph Doria for his support in this effort, as well as current Mayor Terrence Malloy, who I met with last week to discuss this important connection,” Molinaro added.  “I am confident that our two communities will continue to work together in friendship.

“I am also pleased to announce that the S89 bus route has been an unqualified success since its launch last September,” Molinaro continued. “It is presently transporting nearly 1,000 riders each morning. In fact, daily ridership has already surpassed eight other Staten Island express bus lines. Because of its convenience, I fully expect this ridership to grow.

“This valuable bus service would never have been possible without the support of the MTA’s Lee Sander, Port Authority Executive Director Anthony Shorris, NJ Transit Executive

Director Richard Sarles, Senator Charles Schumer, and Staten Island Chamber of Commerce President Linda Baran,” said Molinaro. “It just goes to show that when we all work together, anything is possible.”

The S89 Limited bus runs from Hylan Boulevard and Richmond Avenue in Eltingville to the 34th Street Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Terminal in Bayonne, where commuters can reach destinations in New Jersey and Manhattan.
