B.P. Molinaro identifies traffic safety concern at west-bound Clove Road exit of Staten Island Expressway

Molinaro was almost struck by tractor-trailer at that location last week

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Borough President James P. Molinaro today identified a traffic safety location at the westbound Clove Road exit of the Staten Island Expressway, where it merges into the westbound service road.

Molinaro has asked the New York City Department of Transportation to investigate what he considers an accident-prone location.

“Just last week while I was driving to an event, I exited at Clove Road and was nearly struck by a tractor-trailer,” he said. “I went back to look at the location and it became obvious why it is dangerous.

“The left lane of the service road directs traffic into vehicles exiting the expressway,” he continued. “Even the lane markings encourage traffic to continue moving at full speed in that left lane. Meanwhile, motorists exiting the expressway are blinded by the service road wall from being able to see oncoming traffic.”

Molinaro said he has asked DOT to inspect the area for better road striping, signage, and other improvements that could enhance safety at that location.

“I commend the DOT for all the improvements they have made to dramatically reduce accidents, such as the new left-turn ban on Hylan Boulevard,” Molinaro concluded. “Safety measures at the service road by the Clove Road exit is an important new traffic safety initiative for Staten Island.”
