B. P. Molinaro launches second phase of Community Board recruitment effort

Urges civic-minded Staten Islanders to apply at www.statenislandusa.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Borough President James P. Molinaro today launched the second phase of his Community Board recruitment effort to “refresh” the Borough’s three local boards with new members.

“When I launched the new application process last year at this time, I said we needed to refresh the boards with new blood,” said Molinaro. “The recruitment drive was a great success. I was surprised by the number of people who applied, many of whom held professional occupations.

“Now as we begin a new year, my office is launching the second recruitment phase,” Molinaro continued. “I will first consider the 200 applications I have on file from last year’s drive, and also invite other civic-minded Staten Islanders to apply by filling out a form on my website:  www.StatenIslandUSA.com by the   May 15th deadline.”

Each year, the term of office expires for half of each board’s 50 unsalaried members.

All Community Board appointments are made by the Borough President – half of them unilaterally, and half upon recommendation by the Island’s City Council delegation.

The City Charter empowers the Island’s three Community Boards with an advisory role in zoning and other land use issues, in the City budget process, and in the delegation of municipal services. Any person living or working within a specific district is eligible for appointment to the boards.

Community Board 1 serves the Island’s North Shore, while Community Boards 2 and 3 represent the Mid-Island and South Shore areas, respectively.

“Community Boards play an important civic role in empowering citizens to participate in government decisions that affect their neighborhoods,” Molinaro said. “If you care about your community and you want to make a difference, I encourage you to apply and help shape the future of our borough.”
