B.P. Molinaro hails Dept. of Transportation approval of traffic signal at Mount Loretto
Will Improve Traffic Safety at Main Entrance to Mount Loretto on Hylan Boulevard
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro today thanked the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) for its approval of a traffic signal at the main entrance to the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin-Mount Loretto at the busy intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Cunningham Road in Pleasant Plains.
“For quite some time, the Mount Loretto Friendship Club has been asking my office for help in getting a traffic light at this location,” said Molinaro. “With no traffic signal between Page and Sharrott avenues, some motorists use Hylan Boulevard as a speedway, resulting in several accidents. A year ago this month, senior center member George Srour was involved in a fatal accident while trying to make a left turn onto Hylan Boulevard. The DOT and Commissioner Iris Weinshall are to be commended for responding to Staten Island’s need for a traffic signal at this busy location.”
Besides the senior center – the largest in New York City – Mount Loretto’s 194-acre campus also hosts two schools (P.S. 25 South Richmond I.S./H.S. and the P.S. 3 Annex), a day care facility, the CYO/MIV Community Center, the G.R.A.C.E. Foundation, Catholic Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame, the New York DoJo Institute-Martial Arts Program, Catholic Charities, and many other programs.
“Mount Loretto has become a significant community resource, and this new traffic light is good news for the hundreds of parents, children, and seniors who travel to and from Mount Loretto each and every day,” Molinaro said.
According to DOT, installation of the traffic signal at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Cunningham Road is tentatively scheduled to be completed by September 30th.
