Borough President Molinaro Presents Department of Sanitation with New Mechanical Street Sweeper

Allocated $118,000 from capital budget

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – In an effort to help keep Staten Island’s streets clean and beautiful, Borough President James P. Molinaro today presented to the Department of Sanitation a new mechanical street sweeper at a press conference in front of Borough Hall.

Molinaro allocated $118,000 in capital funds for the vehicle, which will augment Staten Island’s existing street sweeper fleet, which is currently comprised of seven sweepers.  The new state-of-the-art sweeper is the first of its kind on Staten Island.  The sweeper can hold 5.5 cubic yards of street litter and can sweep effectively at speeds of up to 37 miles per hour.  The new sweeper is environmentally-friendly and equipped with several of the latest clean-air technologies.  It utilizes ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, combined with an electronically controlled “Clean Diesel” engine.  The sweeper is also equipped with up-to-date exhaust emission reduction technology.

“The new street sweeper will allow Staten Island to remain the cleanest and greenest borough in New York City.” said Molinaro.

Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said, “We are grateful to the Borough President for funding this new, environmentally friendly mechanical street sweeper for Staten Island.  The broom will not only help Sanitation keep our streets the cleanest they’ve been in the last 30 years, but will allow us to do so in a more efficient manner by keeping down airborne dust and lowering air emissions.  As a Commissioner and as a Staten Islander, I think that’s fantastic.”

At the press conference, Molinaro turned over the keys to Commissioner Doherty and Borough Chief Thomas Zarcone.  The broom will enter the service fleet immediately.
