B.P. Molinaro and Borough Fire Chief Haring announce new patrol area for FDNY fireboat
27-Foot Boston Whaler Will Operate Out of Mansion Marina in Great Kills Harbor
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro and FDNY Borough Commander Assistant Chief Thomas J. Haring today announced that the Department’s recently-purchased fireboat will be dedicated for the first time this summer to South Shore patrol.
Borough President Molinaro allocated $200,000 from his FY’04 capital budget to the FDNY for the state-of-the-art firefighting boat equipped with fire pump systems, HazMat capabilities, a generator, GPS and radar technology, and full rescue capabilities. Until recently, the 27-foot Boston Whaler had operated out of Marine Co. 9 in Stapleton.
“As marine traffic of all types increases each year in the waters of Staten Island -- especially during the summer -- the need for rapid response to marine fires, HazMat incidents and other emergencies also increases,” Molinaro said. “The FDNY is determined to keep pace, and requires a firefighting boat for year-round patrol of our Borough’s shoreline and waterfront infrastructure. It is comforting to know that our beaches will be receiving extra protection this summer during our popular Back to the Beach festivals, free concerts and fireworks shows for all to enjoy.”
Chief Haring said, “The Department would like to thank Borough President Molinaro for this fireboat, and for all the support he’s shown the FDNY through his funding of needed equipment such as our brush fire vehicles and storage facilities. As Borough Commander and a Staten Island resident, I greatly appreciate his commitment to New York’s Bravest.”
