B.P. Molinaro announces appointees to Community Education Council

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Borough President James P. Molinaro today announced that he has appointed Salvatore A. Ballarino and Charles A. Langere to the District 31 Community Education Council (CEC).

“Sal Ballarino, who is my previous appointee, and a former member of the school board, has the drive and dedication to continue to advocate for our children,” said Molinaro.  “He has the leadership ability and will use his personal experience to make a positive difference in our educational community.”

The Borough President’s other appointee, Charles Langere, is a former member of the community school board who “brings with him a myriad of experience from the community,” said Molinaro.  “Charlie is a great team player and, along with his many accomplishments, will be able to greatly benefit our students.”

There are 32 Community Education Councils in New York City, each governing a Community School District that includes elementary and intermediate schools.  Each council has 11 voting members, comprised of nine parents who currently have children in public schools within the district, and two appointees who live, own, or operate a business in the district.  The last two appointees are chosen by the Borough Presidents to serve a two-year term.

Ballarino, of Westerleigh, owns Dairy Maid Ravioli, a pasta manufacturer and distributor, and has served as a member of the community school board for the past 11 years. He is currently one of the Borough President’s appointees to the CEC.  During his last term, he served as chairperson of the building, operation, and zoning committees. He served five years on the executive board of the Staten Island Federation of PTA’s as chairperson of the construction committee, and an additional three years as a delegate. He also served on the executive board of P.S. 60 and I.S. 72.

Langere, retired from the Court System, is a previous three-term member of the community school board.  He is the youth chairman of Community Board 1 and a member of the Rotary Club of Staten Island.  Langere is also a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society.  He represents Staten Island on the Mayor’s Youth Council and is an advisory board member of United Activities Unlimited.

“Staten Island students will be well served by my appointees,” said Molinaro, “and I am confident they will bring a great deal of vision, enthusiasm and insight to the CEC as we move ahead in improving our schools and creating better learning opportunities for our youngsters.”
