Borough President Molinaro And NYC Commissioners To Break Ground On New Exhibit For Staten Island Zoo

Molinaro Allocates $550,000 for New Clydesdale Horse Barn and Petting Zoo

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Borough President James P. Molinaro will be joined by Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate Levin, Department of Design and Construction Commissioner David J. Burney, AIA, and Borough Parks Commissioner Tom Paulo at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new barn exhibit at the Staten Island Zoo on Monday, October 4th at 11:00 a.m. Zoo Director John Caltabiano and his staff are hosting the event on the Zoo grounds.

The event will take place at the barn site near the main gate at Broadway. The Zoo is located at 614 Broadway in West Brighton.

“Having the Commissioners present at this groundbreaking underscores how exciting and important this project is for the Zoo and the children of Staten Island,” said Molinaro.

The Borough President provided $550,000 in capital funding to the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs for the construction of a barn and petting zoo.  The New York City Department of Design and Construction is managing the construction of the project.

The barn will house young goats and two magnificent Clydesdale horses, which are used for the Parks Department’s Mounted Unit. The horses will be present for the groundbreaking of their new home, which is expected to be completed in mid-November. The entire exhibit, including the petting area, is expected to open in the Spring.

With this latest addition to New York City’s Biggest Little Zoo, its 200,000 annual visitors will, for the first time, have direct contact with barnyard animals, as well as a close-up look at the Parks Police’s towering Clydesdales.
