Borough President Molinaro urges City Council to Pass Contractor Licensing Bill
STATEN ISLAND, NY – Borough President James P. Molinaro today proclaimed his strong support for a proposed City Council bill that would force home builders to register by name and obtain a license from the City of New York.
“It is of great concern to me that under current law, home contractors are not required to obtain a license from the City,” Molinaro said. “Because they are free to come and go as they please, this opens the door for some to build substandard homes and then proceed to disband their firms and reincorporate under a new name before they can be held accountable for their prior work. We must put an end to this irresponsible practice.”
Borough President Molinaro has written to Mayor Bloomberg urging him to sign the bill into law if it passes. In his letter, Molinaro stated that this bill would be especially beneficial to the people of Staten Island, one of the state’s fastest growing counties and where growth management is a major issue.
“I believe that this bill would only add to the successes that the Mayor’s Growth Management Task Force has afforded our Borough. The licensing of contractors is another area in which we can improve on our efforts to halt irresponsible development,” Molinaro said.
Molinaro concluded, “By making builders register by name, we will take away their ability to hide from homeowners who express legitimate complaints about the quality of their work. I urge the City Council to expedite the passage of this important bill, and I trust that Mayor Bloomberg will recognize the great need to sign this bill into law.”
